Stuart Gustafson

Adolescent therapist

The Life and Times of Stuart On March 1, 1971 I was born in the Big Apple, New York City to Dennis and Judy Gustafson. At the time my father was attending medical school where he was studying orthopedic medican at Columbia Medical School and my mother worked as a special education teacher. They are the sole reason that I am involved in this helping profession. My beloved parents' example of service and dedication to the persons in need propelled me into becoming a social worker. As parents they taught me the value of serving people. Furthermore, this instilled in me an understanding that people who experience various types of hardships require different types of service.

I liken my family to the Brady Bunch. I am Greg Brady, the eldest of six children. I have three sisters (Joanna, Cathryn and Susan) and two brothers (Andrew and Carl "cheese"). My siblings now live in Utah, where they are either working professionals or going to school at BYU or UVSC. My parents continue to reside in California. However, unlike the Brady's, we did not have a dog as our family pet, rather we had a pet goose. The goose was so crazy he thought he was a rooster. Every morning at the crack of dawn he would wake me up squawking at the top of his lungs right outside my window.

Most of my life was spent growing up on Danville, California. It is an area located about sixty miles away from San Francisco. Following graduating fron high school, I spent two years in Spain serving a mission for my church. I then elected to attend Ricks College for two years where I received an associates degree in sociology. The next four years were spent studying social work form Brigham Young University, receiving both a Bachelors ans Masters Degree in the field. My first job after graduating from college was working in the field of sexual abuse, primarily with individuals who commit the abuse. The two years I spent working at the Intermountian Specialized Abuse Treatment Center (ISAT) was a valuable training. It helped me to learn to deal with people who have difficult problems and to care for people regardless of the choices that have made. I now work in the Adolescent Program at the Gatheing Place.

My hobbies include anything involving the arts. I enjoy watching professional dance and going to museums. In college I used to do a little acting. I was in "Arsenic and Old Lace", Arthur Millers' play "All My Sons" and a French play that I can not remember the title. I am a life long Oakland Raiders Football fan. Additional interests include learning about Middle Eastern History and reading a good book.
