Our prenatal workshop covers a variety of subjects which help a mother prepare for childbirth and early infancy. The classes are based on the principle that healthy, happy mothers tend to raise healthier, happier children. Practical topics covered in the classes include the role of nutrition in pregnancy, preparing nutritious and inexpensive snacks for mom and child, healthy ways of managing stress, infant CPR, common medical concerns of pregnancy, healthy parenting skills, infant development, the effects of substances on the developing fetus, self-esteem, grooming, communication skills, and issues such as domestic violence, etc… Classes are very informal, with healthy snacks and craft projects helping to create an inviting atmosphere. After class, each girl is presented with a small gift to reinforce the concept taught that day. At the end of the entire series, each is presented with a quilt (which she herself designs and helps to make), a rose with a poem and a certificate of graduation from the program. For further information you may call Clara Hinckley, LCSW @ 226-2255. |

The program's goal is to help children who have difficulty in coping with life develop the necessary skills to do so. Often children have difficulty trusting others due to previous experiences where for one reason or another survival and emotional needs have not been met. Often children learn unhealthy coping skills that will become self-defeating patterns of behaviors if not taught differently, therefore perpetuating a generational cycle of unhealthy behaviors such as emotional, physical and sexual abuse. This program is for any child that needs to learn to deal with emotional issues. It is also for children that need to learn healthy coping skills. The children's program includes individual/ filial Play Therapy, coping skills, group therapy and family therapy. Children will have the opportunity to address issues of substance abuse, their own or by family members, physical/sexual/emotional abuse, lack of trust, abandonment, rejection, depression, anger and stress, etc…Children learn such skills as effective communication, stress and anger management, trust, healthy boundaries and better self-esteem, through developmentally appropriate activities and Play Therapy.
